    The maximum amount for a federal stafford loan for a dependent freshman is $5,500/year. After that amount, your parents will either need to take out a parent-PLUS loan for the remainder, or you will have to apply for private student loans. If your parents are denied a PLUS loan, then you would be eligible for federal loans in the amount an independent freshman is (which is $9,500/year). If you can get approved for private student loans, you could take out that much per year; however, you will need an excellent credit score or a cosigner (with an excellent credit score) to qualify. In addition, the interest rates for federal loans are fixed, low rates… privatel loans will vary.
